Can a TV installation include a soundbar?

Yes. A TV installation can include secure soundbar mounting, suitable cable management and connection to the television, with the equipment configured so the TV and soundbar work together correctly.

Yes. A TV installation can include the soundbar as part of the same AV setup, whether the soundbar is positioned on furniture, fixed below a wall-mounted television or attached using a suitable mounting system. The work should account for the television, soundbar, power supplies and the connection between the two rather than treating each item as a separate installation.

The installation may include:

  • Assessing the wall, cabinet or mounting surface to confirm that it is suitable for the proposed arrangement.
  • Positioning the soundbar so it is aligned with the screen and does not obstruct the television or its remote-control sensor.
  • Connecting the soundbar to the television through the appropriate audio connection, such as HDMI ARC or eARC, optical audio or another supported method.
  • Routing power and signal cables neatly, including through existing channels or within approved concealment routes where the installation allows.
  • Connecting compatible external equipment, such as a set-top box, games console or Blu-ray player, where this forms part of the agreed AV arrangement.
  • Pairing and positioning a wireless subwoofer or rear speakers if they are supplied as part of the soundbar system.

Compatibility needs to be checked before installation. The television and soundbar must support a suitable audio connection, and the available ports need to be considered alongside any other connected equipment. HDMI ARC or eARC can allow the television remote to control basic soundbar functions, but this depends on the equipment and its settings. Optical connections can be useful where ARC or eARC is unavailable, although they may not support every advanced audio format.

Physical positioning also affects the result. A soundbar placed directly below the television generally provides more consistent sound alignment than one positioned substantially to the side. It should not cover the bottom edge of the screen, block ventilation openings or interfere with sockets and controls. If the television is mounted on a wall, the bracket, soundbar mount and cable routes need to be planned together so that the finished installation is secure and accessible for future maintenance.

Configuration is more than simply plugging in the equipment. The television may need its audio output changed from internal speakers to the connected soundbar, while settings such as HDMI-CEC, volume control, audio format and lip-sync delay may need checking. The system can then be tested with television audio and connected sources to confirm that sound is being produced through the intended equipment.

Not every soundbar can be mounted in the same way, and some models are designed only for tabletop placement. The type of wall, the mounting instructions, the weight of the equipment and the location of electrical sockets all affect what can be included. Where existing cables or sockets are unsuitable, the required electrical or building work should be identified before the installation is started.

RJW Electrical can therefore scope a TV and soundbar installation around the equipment already owned or the arrangement being planned. The quotation can distinguish between mounting, electrical work, cable concealment and AV configuration, making it clear which parts are included and whether any additional equipment or preparation is required.

Wall-mounted television with a soundbar positioned beneath it

A soundbar can form part of a TV installation, but its performance still depends on the room and the equipment’s design. Mounting the unit securely will not turn a standard soundbar into a full surround-sound system, and the result may be affected by room dimensions, reflective surfaces, furniture and the position of a separate subwoofer.

These factors are worth considering when deciding where the soundbar should go. A clear path in front of the unit helps audio reach the listening position, while enclosed shelving or placing objects directly in front of it can affect clarity. If the system uses upward-firing or surround speakers, the ceiling, walls and available space also influence whether those features can work as intended. The installation can accommodate the chosen equipment, but the soundbar’s supported features and the room itself determine the final audio experience.
