How long does domestic electrical servicing take?

Domestic electrical servicing has no fixed duration: a straightforward service may be completed in a short visit, while a larger property, more circuits or additional testing can take longer. The electrician will confirm the likely timescale once the property and scope of the service have been assessed.

Domestic electrical servicing can take anything from a relatively short inspection to a more involved visit, depending on the size and condition of the installation and the tests included. A small, accessible property with clearly identified circuits is generally simpler to assess than a larger home with multiple consumer units, extensions, outbuildings or older wiring.

The stated service should be checked before the appointment, because “servicing” can describe different levels of work. It may involve a visual inspection, basic operational checks, testing of protective devices and selected circuits, or a more comprehensive assessment of the installation. The more circuits and electrical components included, the longer the testing process is likely to take.

Several factors can affect the timescale:

  • Property size and layout: Larger homes take longer to inspect because there are more rooms, accessories and circuits to trace.
  • Number and type of circuits: Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, garden supplies, heating systems and electric vehicle equipment may require additional checks.
  • Access to equipment: The electrician may need access to the consumer unit, switches, sockets, light fittings and fixed appliances. Obstructed or inaccessible equipment can slow the inspection.
  • Age and condition of the installation: Older, altered or poorly labelled systems may require more investigation before testing can be completed safely.
  • Records and circuit identification: Existing installation certificates, previous inspection reports and a clear circuit schedule can help establish what is being tested.
  • Additional defects: Signs of overheating, damaged accessories, loose connections, inadequate earthing or other faults may require further examination.

Testing may require individual circuits or parts of the installation to be isolated. This can temporarily interrupt power to affected equipment, so sensitive devices should be safely shut down beforehand. The electrician should explain any necessary isolation and avoid leaving an installation in an unsafe condition.

If a fault is found, the original servicing work may need to be extended or a separate repair may be recommended. Minor defects might be discussed during the visit, whereas more complex issues can require further investigation, replacement parts or a planned remedial appointment. A servicing visit should not be assumed to include unlimited repair work unless this is specifically included in the agreed scope.

For a more accurate timescale, provide details of the property, the areas and circuits to be checked, any known electrical problems and whether inspection records are available. It is also useful to mention recent alterations, such as an extension, rewiring, new consumer unit, garden supply or electric vehicle charger.

After the work, the documentation should identify the inspection or tests carried out, any limitations, defects found and recommendations for further action. If a formal condition report is required rather than general servicing, this should be requested in advance because its scope and documentation are different.

The length of a domestic electrical service should not be used as a measure of its quality. A shorter visit may be appropriate where the agreed scope is limited and the installation is straightforward, while a longer visit may reflect the need to test more circuits or investigate results safely. The electrician should explain what has been examined and identify any parts of the installation that were excluded or could not be tested. This makes the recorded findings more useful than an estimate based only on the time spent at the property.
